Wisdom from The Cowboys
I just finished watching John Wayne's movie The Cowboys on Blu-Ray
HD-DVD. At the end of the movie was a documentary with a reunion of
some of the boys, now men, from the movie and director Mark Rydell
and actor, Bruce Dern. Rydell and Dern were noted, strident liberals
at the time the original movie was made, and both expressed vivid
fear at meeting John Wayne, a noted, strident conservative. Of course
both men were pleasantly surprised with how gracious and kind Wayne
treated them, despite their opposing political views.
Isn't that the way it always is? Liberals consistently demonize
conservatives as cold-hearted, mean-spirited bigots, as sure a
steroetype in movies and television as the evil white businessman who
murders and steals for profits. But again and again, we hear
anectodotes of the kindness of noted conservatives like Ronald
Reagan, Bill Buckley, and even Rush Limbaugh. And we see year after
year that conservatives give far more money to charities than their
liberal counterparts.
So, I ask you. Who do you expect to be more kind and gracious to
another human being: a person whose philosophy is based on respect
for the individual, their rights and freedoms, or a person whose
philosophy is based on using the government to force the individual to obey?
